Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced at the tabling of Belanjawan 2027 that the government has increased the duty-free purchase ceiling for domestic and international tourists visiting Langkawi and Labuan to RM10,000

The strategic policy shift forms part of a broader national initiative to revitalise commercial activity and accelerate tourism recovery across Malaysia's duty-free island destinations, according to Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister.

Under the updated regulations, visitors must complete a minimum stay of 48 hours on either island to qualify for the higher RM10,000 duty-free exemption threshold.

The mandatory duration requirement aims to encourage longer overnight stays, directly benefiting local hotel operators, food and beverage establishments, and transport providers.

To further support local commerce, the government has expanded import duty exemptions to cover a wider selection of locally manufactured products in Langkawi

By granting tariff relief on essential materials and locally produced goods, the government intends to reduce operational overheads for domestic entrepreneurs while making local products more competitive for visiting shoppers.
