Americans Are Loving These Beloved Malaysian Snacks In Buzzfeed's 'Snack Swap'
"Snack swaps destroyed something I loved, and showed me there's something better."
Less than a week after Buzzfeed employees cried actual tears while eating Malaysia's spiciest instant noodles, they're back with more Malaysian food to try
In the YouTube video posted on 28 May, two pairs - consisting of one Malaysian and one American each - were given similar beloved childhood snacks from both countries.
The mission? They had to decide which they preferred.
1. Goldfish vs Muruku Ikan
Verdict: Malaysia - Muruku Ikan.
"I'm not gonna try to pronounce it. I love this, this is really good!" said Joyce.
Funnily enough, both Americans thought that Muruku would be the perfect side dish to soup.
"It's cold outside and grandma's like, "Honey, I'm gonna make you some soup!" and then she could put these right next to my soup," she added.
2. Fritos Chili Cheese vs Bika Chicken
Verdict: A tie.
"I actually believe that they both win, I think they taste good together!" Joyce said.
Garey agreed, saying that, "This is like a new relationship between countries!"
3. Maruchan Ramen vs Mamee Monster
Verdict: Malaysia - Mamee Monster.
Impressed by Mamee's crunchiness and the fact that it's meant to be eaten dry, Matt exclaimed that, "Malaysia wins!"
"Ooh, that's so good!" he added.
"Snack swaps destroyed the one I loved, and showed me there's something better," Joyce said, adding that she wants to order them online.
4. Smarties vs Haw Flakes
Verdict: A tie.
While Garey said that Haw Flakes "has a special spot" for him, Joyce preferred Smarties.
"Only because I was just expecting a different consistency. That Haw Flakes, the taste is fire," she added.
5. Bubblicious Bubble Gum vs Marukawa Fusen Gum
Verdict: A tie.
"This is so good! It's more floral," Matt said about Marukawa Fusen Gum.
In terms of "bubble quality" though, Bubblicious won for Garey.
However, both agreed that Malaysia's Marukawa Fusen Gum won bonus points for coming with a free tattoo.
