Kajang Prison has quietly become an unexpected foodie destination, thanks to one of Malaysia's surprisingly popular curry puff spots operating inside the prison compound
A recent Threads post went viral after a user asked the official Prison Department account whether members of the public could actually walk into Kajang Prison to buy its famous curry puffs.
Threads user @kikinnnb_ asked, "Can I walk into Kajang Prison because I want to buy curry puffs? Should there be an appointment or what?"
The Prison Department casually replied, saying that yes, people can walk into Kajang Prison and inform the guards that they're heading to Prismart Prison Kajang for the mutton curry puffs
They also mentioned visitors could stop by the My Pride Sales Gallery to shop for products handmade by inmates, including batik fabric, woven songket, and frozen food.
But the line that really won Malaysians over was this, "If the curry puffs are delicious, don't share it around, later there might not be enough."
Naturally, the Internet immediately shared it around
The exchange quickly went viral on Threads, racking up thousands of likes and hundreds of shares as Malaysians flooded the comments section with jokes, curiosity, and surprisingly passionate reviews about the prison-made snacks.
For those unfamiliar, Kajang Prison's famous karipap pusing already has a bit of a cult following.
Unlike regular curry puffs, karipap pusing is known for its flaky spiral pastry layers that resemble puff pastry. According to fans online, the fillings are generous too, especially the chicken, beef, and highly sought-after mutton version.
In fact, several commenters claimed the mutton curry puff is almost impossible to get because it sells out quickly.
Located about a minute's drive from Prismart, the My Pride Sales Gallery sells a wide range of goods made by inmates across Malaysia as part of rehabilitation and vocational training programmes
Apart from the famous curry puffs, visitors can also find frozen food like cucur badak, traditional kuih raya, sauces, baked goods, batik fabric, and woven songket products.
According to TikTok user @yarafaee, some of the best-selling festive treats include pineapple tarts and semperit, with prices reportedly starting from RM15.
She also shared that the shop claims any extra profits from sales would sometimes go towards treating inmates to better meals.
Several TikTok users said they've been buying kuih raya from the gallery for years, while many others swore by the frozen curry puffs.
One commenter wrote, "My uncle is a warden at Kajang Prison. Every time he comes back to our hometown, he brings curry puffs from here. They're so delicious, especially the mutton ones."
