For a lot of students, struggling in school doesn't just affect grades, it slowly brings down their confidence as well

That was the reality for students like Mior Iskandar Shah from SMK Putatan in Penampang, Sabah, who admitted that it was difficult to recover whenever he performed badly in exams.

"My journey felt like a repeating circle. Whenever I failed, it was hard for me to get back up again," he said.

This is where government education initiatives like Program Anak Kita has helped

After joining Program Anak Kita, Mior noticed a change in the way he did his revisions.

"Program Anak Kita helped me a lot in my studies and improved the way I study."

He also successfully scored straight As despite having failed a few subjects before.

"I used to fail Mathematics and Science, but now I'm getting straight As," he shared.

Since February 2025, Program Anak Kita, in collaboration with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), has supported more than 20,000 students nationwide

This was achieved through structured academic and wellbeing interventions where students received:

  • Online tuition classes for Bahasa Melayu, Sejarah, and Mathematics
  • High-dosage tutoring sessions with Guru Bitara and coaches
  • Face-to-face sessions for special needs students
  • Replay classes, Telegram Hotline Clinics, and exam technique content
  • Counselling support by certified counsellors
  • Final acceleration classes before SPM
  • Post-SPM pathway guidance, including special access routes to UPSI and USM

"By bringing together the expertise, resources, and experience of both institutions, Program Anak Kita is able to provide a comprehensive support ecosystem that addresses students' academic needs while strengthening teaching and learning practices," said Muhammad Fahmi Sobree, Assistant Registrar of the Social Innovation and Knowledge Transfer Unit, Division of Industry and Community Network, USM.

"This collaborative approach ensures that interventions are not only effective in improving academic performance but also sustainable and scalable for broader educational impact," he added.

The programme also recorded an average attendance rate of over 88%, reflecting strong student engagement throughout the initiative

According to Fahmi, the response was highly encouraging, with students demonstrating strong commitment and active participation in tutoring sessions, motivational activities, academic workshops, and other learning interventions.

"Despite facing various academic and socio-economic challenges, many participants remained engaged and showed a genuine willingness to improve their performance," he explained.

Since the implementation of the programme, there was also a positive change in the students' final results

Professor Dr Mohd Izwan Shahril, Director of the Corporate Communications Division at UPSI said that based on the impact analysis of the Program Anak Kita, participants achieved highly encouraging results.

"Approximately 98.5% of students met the requirements to obtain their SPM certificate, while 99.8% attended and sat for the SPM examination. In terms of subject performance improvements, 67% of students showed progress in Bahasa Melayu, 85% in History, and 78% in Mathematics," he shared.

"Overall, these findings indicate that the majority of participants recorded significant improvements in their academic performance compared to their achievement levels before joining the programme," he added.

For Nurul Ezzati Nadhira Nadhraa, another student from SMK Putatan, Program Anak Kita made her more disciplined and this resulted in straight As for her SPM examinations

"When I first joined, I didn't follow the study schedule properly. But over time, I started following it, and my results improved," she said.

The impact became more obvious in her exam performance.

"During trials, I got a lot of Cs, especially for Mathematics and Science. But in SPM, I managed to get straight As."

For Mior, visual learning also helped transform a subject he once struggled with into one he genuinely enjoyed

"I enjoyed History classes the most because I'm the type to remember things visually." he shared.

Pang Yin Xuan from SMK Puteri in Negeri Sembilan shared about how she improved learning from the tablets provided through the programme.

"The tablet was very useful because I only had a phone before, and the screen was too small. With the tablet, everything was easier to see," she said.

While improved grades were important, many students said the programme ultimately helped them rebuild their confidence
