Good news for Sarawakians: IKEA Kuching is officially opening in December 2026
IKEA Malaysia announced on 24 August that its upcoming Kuching store will mark the brand's first physical store in East Malaysia, bringing the IKEA shopping experience closer to customers in Sarawak.
The store will also be a little different from the four existing IKEA stores in Malaysia.
Unlike the larger IKEA stores Malaysians are used to, IKEA Kuching will use a small-format concept designed to offer the IKEA experience in a more compact and convenient setting
Shoppers can expect to browse room settings and home furnishing solutions, as well as selected products that can be taken home on the day.
There will also be access to a wider range of IKEA products to purchase, so you won't necessarily have to squeeze an entire Billy bookshelf into your car on your first visit.
The format is designed to cater to everything from small home upgrades to furnishing an entire room or home.

Before opening the store, IKEA said it spent time visiting homes in Kuching to better understand how locals live, including their everyday needs and challenges.
According to the company, homes in Kuching are strongly shaped by family, togetherness, and hospitality, with living and dining spaces often having to accommodate multiple activities and gatherings.
Storage and organisation were also identified as common challenges across both landed and high-rise homes.
So, rather than simply dropping a standard IKEA showroom into Kuching, the company said the new store will feature solutions that are relevant to how people in Sarawak actually live.
