Malaysia's main international airport has upgraded the way passengers catch their e-hailing rides

As of 4 August, KLIA Terminal 1 has introduced a new e-hailing pick-up experience complete with a dedicated waiting lounge, self-service booking kiosks, and live screens showing exactly when your driver will arrive.

The new facilities are located on Level 1 of the Main Terminal Building, making it easier for travellers to wait comfortably instead of standing outside while tracking their ride.

The revamped pick-up area comes with several new features designed to make the process smoother:

  • A comfortable passenger waiting lounge
  • Self-service kiosks where you can book your ride and notify your driver of the exact pick-up location
  • Live display screens that track your driver's arrival in real time
  • Dedicated e-hailing pick-up bays
  • On-ground marshals to help passengers and manage traffic

According to KLIA, the process is as simple as tapping the kiosk, relaxing in the lounge, and heading outside once your ride arrives.

The airport has also introduced a Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) system integrated with its Passenger Information Display System (PIDS), allowing authorised e-hailing vehicles to be monitored more efficiently.

The upgrades are meant to make pick-ups quicker and more organised

The improvements were developed following discussions with e-hailing operators and in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD).

Besides improving convenience, the new system is also intended to reduce congestion and discourage unauthorised e-hailing vehicles from using the designated pick-up area.

To support the operation and maintenance of the new facilities, an RM3 entry fee is now charged to every authorised e-hailing vehicle entering the dedicated passenger pick-up zone at Level 1, KLIA Terminal 1

Meanwhile, e-hailing drivers will continue to have a maximum of 10 minutes to pick up passengers at the kerbside. Vehicles that overstay will be subject to penalty charges to help keep traffic moving and ensure pick-up bays remain available for other passengers.

KLIA Senior General Manager for Passenger Experience Abd Hasman Abd Muhimin said the enhancements are part of the airport's efforts to create a smoother end-to-end travel experience and strengthen KLIA's position as a world-class gateway.
