According to the 2023 EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI), Malaysia ranked third in Asia, following Singapore in first place and the Philippines in second place.
The index, which ranks 113 countries based on their citizens' English proficiency put Malaysia at 25th place globally.
Kuala Lumpur is the only city from Malaysia to make the EF EPI 2023 City score list
Malaysia's capital matched the national high proficiency category with a score of 564. Malaysia scored 568 overall, slightly lower than last year, while the global average stands at 502.
With a score of 587, Perak has the highest level of English proficiency among the states in Malaysia
Kuantan recorded an impressive score of 604, while Malaysians aged 26 to 30 were the most proficient in English, averaging a score of 582.
The EF EPI uses the EF Standard English Test (SET) to evaluate language abilities according to six levels in the European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Over 2.2 million participants from 113 countries took the EF SET in 2022, contributing to the 2023 EF EPI results.
