7 Malaysians Share The Advice They Would Give Themselves 10 Years Ago
What would you tell yourself 10 years ago?
1. "One thing that I'd tell myself is to consider a job that's relevant to what I studied"
"While it's completely okay to work in a different field (and it turned out pretty well for me), one thing I can't help but think about is what it would've been like if I had pursued a career in law. I'd advise my 10-year-ago self to at least take up an internship in a law firm first, before actually jumping to the conclusion that a legal career wasn't meant for me."
- Claudea, 32
2. "Don't get too caught up in your little bubble, that you miss out on experiencing life to the fullest"
"While your studies, activities, and group of friends may seem like a lot to juggle already, don't just go saying no to everything else. Go out of your way to try out things that make you uncomfortable, and visit places you'd never get the chance to otherwise. There's more to life than your little world."
- Jeremy, 29
3. "Don't keep money in your savings account!"
"If there is one thing that I'd advise myself from 10 years ago, it would be to start investing young. The US stock market index, Standard and Poor's 500 (S&P500), showed that stocks have gone up by 200% over the past 10 years.
"Knowing that I'd choose a career in a less lucrative industry (media instead of advertising), I would have told myself to set a goal to become financially free. I would have advised 20-year-old me to let the money work for us as early as possible so that the compounded gains can sustain us in the future. Don't keep money in your savings account!"
- Wan Xiang, 30
4. "I wish I had tried more things"
"Whether it's picking up a new instrument, trying out a new sport, or picking up a technical skill, I would tell my younger self to not be bogged down by shyness or fear to participate in more things. I'm 25 now, and although I am happy with how my life turned out, I do wonder what else I could have excelled at if I had simply taken more risks.
"Essentially, there's nothing wrong with picking up a new hobby later in life, but it's always nice to have that cushion of time and youth."
- Hafiz, 25
5. "Other people's perceptions and actions should not matter to you"
"10 years ago, I was 14 and back then (even now), we were so engrossed with social media and people's perceptions of us. I wish I could've told my 14-year-old self that other people's opinions and negative actions towards me don't matter.
"You should make decisions and relationships in which you can see progress or benefit in five years' time. There's no point putting so much thought or crying over things that don't matter. Don't waste that time, and start focusing on your own development or picking up a new skill.
"Trust me, it will be worth it for you!"
- Chealsea, 24
6. "I would have invested in digital currency earlier"
"Although I'm not much into crypto, knowing what I know today, I would definitely tell my 10-year-ago self to get that Bitcoin, ignore the naysayers, and cash in on the new tech that has made many millionaires."
- Sadho, 37
7. "Live life in the present! Don't get hung up on the past or worry about the future."
"Unlike baking, you can't set a timer in life and expect things to come out exactly as intended, even with all the right ingredients or right recipe. Some things are just out of your control, so just enjoy the process.
"Plus, being young and college-bound means you'll not only meet new people and form lasting friendships, but also go on exciting adventures, both big and small — just keep doing what you're doing, and don't overthink it."
- Marion, 30
While the people we were 10 years ago may be different from who we are today, one thing we can learn is that we're all on a journey, which means it's never too late to realise our goals and dreams.
