The Penang State Museum has officially reopened to the public after nine years of restoration and upgrading works
According to Bernama, the heritage building has been carefully restored, refreshed, and modernised as part of the state government's efforts to preserve its cultural legacy while creating a more engaging museum experience for visitors.
Built in phases starting in 1896, the museum is recognised as both a state and national heritage building.
The RM18 million restoration project was carried out to restore the building to its original architectural appearance while upgrading its exhibition spaces for a new generation of visitors.
The revamped museum now features several interactive exhibits and more than 1,200 artefacts
Visitors can explore 15 exhibition spaces that trace the state's history, culture, and heritage, from prehistoric discoveries at the Guar Kepah archaeological site in Seberang Perai to Penang's development before and after Malaysia's independence.
The museum is equipped with HD projection systems, interactive kiosks, simulators, and motion sensors to create a more immersive visitor experience.
One section even preserves the remains of the building that was damaged by bombing during World War II.
Penang State Museum board director Wong Hon Wai said the museum is not merely a place to preserve artefacts, but also a platform to foster greater appreciation for the state's history, culture, and identity
He added that the museum also features five dedicated exhibition spaces representing the five principles of the Rukun Negara.
Speaking at the reopening ceremony yesterday, 23 July, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the museum has served as an important institution for preserving Penang's history since it first opened in 1965.
"With a fresher and more interactive exhibition concept, coupled with its strategic location in the heart of George Town, the state government is targeting at least 2,500 visitors a month, or about 30,000 annually," he said.
The Penang State Museum is now open from 9am to 5pm daily, except Fridays
To celebrate its reopening, admission is free for all visitors until 31 August.
