If your driving licence has been expired for years, this is your reminder to check its status because you can't simply renew it once it has passed the three-year mark
According to the Malaysian government, a Competent Driving Licence (CDL) that has expired for more than three years cannot be renewed.
Instead, licence holders will have to go through the process of obtaining a driving licence again, which includes retaking the required driving tests.
What happens if your driving licence has expired for more than three years?
Once a CDL has exceeded the three-year expiry period, it is no longer eligible for normal renewal.
According to the Road Transport Department (JPJ), affected licence holders need to submit an appeal application for an expired driving licence. This can be done through JPJ or the MySIKAP portal.
If the appeal is approved, applicants may be exempted from taking the theory test (Ujian Bahagian 1), but they will still need to sit for the practical driving tests:
- Ujian Praktikal II (vehicle handling test)
- Ujian Praktikal III (road test)
If the appeal is unsuccessful, applicants will have to restart the driving licence application process from the beginning, including taking the required tests.
Here are ways to renew your licence:
You can renew your driving licence physically by visiting:
– JPJ state or branch offices
– Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) counters
– Mobile JPJ counters
– Pos Malaysia counters
– Self-service kiosks
Alternatively, you can renew it online through the MySIKAP portal, MyJPJ mobile app, or MyEG portal.
Once your renewal application for a Learner Driving Licence (LDL), Probationary Driving Licence (PDL), or Competent Driving Licence (CDL) has been approved, you can also access your digital driving licence through the MyJPJ app instead of carrying a physical copy.
How long can you renew your driving licence for?
For Malaysian drivers, a CDL can be renewed for between one and five years at a time. Keeping track of your expiry date is important because once it passes the three-year limit, you'll no longer be able to simply renew it as usual.
If you're unsure whether your licence is still valid, you can check your driving licence status through JPJ's online services, including MyJPJ and MySIKAP.
So, before you let your driving licence gather dust for years, it might be worth renewing it early because nobody wants to go back to revising road signs, three-point turns, and hill starts all over again.
