Malaysians will soon get to step inside Willy Wonka's world, as Roald Dahl's Charlie And The Chocolate Factory musical is coming to Malaysia for the first time
The Broadway musical will make its Malaysian debut at the Jeffrey Cheah Performing Arts Centre (JCPAC) from 22 December 2026 to 10 January 2027.
The production is presented by Broadway International Group and Broadway Asia, in association with Sunway South Quay, as part of its global tour.
Based on Roald Dahl's beloved 1964 novel, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory follows young Charlie Bucket, who finds one of the coveted Golden Tickets and wins a chance to visit the mysterious chocolate factory owned by the eccentric Willy Wonka.
Inside, Charlie and the other Golden Ticket winners encounter chocolate rivers, nut-sorting squirrels, mischievous Oompa-Loompas, and all sorts of fantastical inventions.
The musical also features songs from the classic 1971 film, including Pure Imagination, The Candy Man, and I've Got A Golden Ticket, alongside original music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
The pair are also behind the music and lyrics for the Broadway musical Hairspray.
For its global tour, the production has been given new staging and visual effects designed to make Wonka's world feel even more fantastical
The Malaysian production will feature 3D hologauze technology, projections, puppetry, special effects, and new magic and illusions, with renowned Las Vegas magic and illusion designer Tim Clothier joining the creative team.
The global tour is directed by Matt Lenz, with choreography by Alison Solomon, while the original Broadway production was directed by four-time Tony Award-winning director Jack O'Brien.
The musical has already had Broadway and West End runs
The stage musical first premiered in London's West End in 2013 before making its Broadway debut in 2017, where it ran for more than 300 performances.
It also received two Olivier Awards during its West End run.
The production later toured North America for four years before the current international tour began, bringing the show to cities across Asia and beyond.
The current global tour has already visited cities including Shanghai, with upcoming stops including Hong Kong and other Asian cities.
Now, Malaysia is getting its own Golden Ticket.
Tickets go on sale on 24 September
The show will run at Jeffrey Cheah Performing Arts Centre, Selangor, from 22 December 2026 to 10 January 2027.
