At over 130 million years old, it's even older than the Amazon and is home to an incredible range of wildlife, including hornbills, elephants, tapirs, sun bears, and the rare Rafflesia flower.

Unlike more touristy nature spots, Royal Belum remains relatively untouched, making it a great option for travellers looking for a quieter and more raw adventure.

While places like Cameron Highlands and Langkawi often steal the spotlight, Royal Belum offers something completely different. If you're looking for an adventure that feels a little more off-the-beaten-path, this might just be worth visiting.

Here's how to get there

The easiest way to get there is by car.

The drive from Kuala Lumpur to Pulau Banding, the main gateway to Royal Belum, takes around five to six hours.

If you don't drive, you can also:

  • Take a bus from KL to Gerik and then continue by taxi or bus to Pulau Banding
  • Take the ETS to Kuala Kangsar before arranging a bus or taxi to Gerik and Pulau Banding

Since the buses do not depart on a frequent timetable, make arrangements for the journey early. Once you reach the Banding Island Public Jetty, boats are provided to get to the resorts.

Most tours and accommodation providers can also help arrange transfers.

Here are some of the activities you can do once you reach:

1. Go on a boat cruise across Temenggor Lake
The vast lake is dotted with small islands and offers access to many of the park's attractions. The boat ride itself is part of the experience, with stunning views of forest-covered hills stretching into the distance.

2. Search for the giant Rafflesia flower
Royal Belum is one of the few places in Peninsular Malaysia where you can spot the Rafflesia, the world's largest flower.

Since the flowers bloom unpredictably and only last for a few days, sightings are never guaranteed, making every encounter feel extra special.

3. Trek through one of the world's oldest rainforests
Many guided tours include jungle trekking routes that take visitors deep into the forest.

Along the way, you'll get to learn about local flora and fauna while experiencing a rainforest ecosystem that has existed for millions of years.

4. Visit waterfalls hidden in the jungle
Several waterfalls can be reached by boat and short jungle hikes.

Popular stops include Sungai Kooi Waterfall and Ruok Waterfall, where visitors can cool off after a trek and enjoy a picnic surrounded by nature.

5. Spot hornbills and other wildlife
The forest is famous for its hornbill population and is believed to be the only place in Malaysia where all 10 hornbill species can be found.

Wildlife sightings can also include elephants, deer, tapirs, and monkeys, although these are much harder to spot.

6. Visit an Orang Asli village
Some tours include visits to Orang Asli settlements, where visitors can learn about the indigenous communities who have lived in the region for generations.

7. Stay on a houseboat
For a more unique experience, skip the hotel room and spend the night on a houseboat floating on Temenggor Lake.

Many houseboat packages include activities such as jungle trekking, waterfall visits, wildlife spotting, fishing, kayaking, bamboo rafting, stargazing, and even barbecue dinners onboard.
