Pink October marks Breast Cancer Awareness month all over the world
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Malaysian women. According to the Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia (BCWA), 1 in 20 Malaysian women are at risk of getting breast cancer during their lifetime.
Prevention is better than cure. That's why it's important to pay attention to your body.
More than 80% of breast cancer occurs in women above the age of 50. So it is important to have a mammogram every 2 years once you reach that age. For younger women (below 35 years), an ultrasound scan of the breasts may be helpful for patients with early symptoms.
If you have family history of breast cancer, it may be beneficial for you to have an annual breast screening starting from an early age.
You should also learn the steps to perform a self-breast screening. Take note on changes in breast size, inverted nipples, rash and discharge from nipples, swelling and any unusual lumps on the breast, or constant pain in your breast.
If you have any concerns, seek medical consultation immediately.
