If you have been looking for ways to lower your electricity bill, you might have heard about the Time-of-Use (ToU) tariff. Introduced as part of a broader tariff restructure in July 2025, this scheme allows customers to pay different rates based on when they use electricity, rather than a flat rate .

How the ToU tariff works

Under the ToU scheme, electricity is cheaper during "off-peak" hours and more expensive during "peak" hours. For both domestic and non-domestic users, peak hours are set from 2.00pm to 10.00pm on weekdays . Conversely, all hours outside of this window—including the entire day on weekends and gazetted public holidays—are classified as off-peak, offering lower rates .

Who is eligible to switch?

The ToU tariff is an opt-in scheme available to all registered TNB customers in Peninsular Malaysia . Whether you are a residential household or a business owner, you are not required to switch; you can choose to remain on the General tariff if it better suits your consumption patterns .

Is it worth the switch?

The ToU tariff is most beneficial if you can shift your energy-heavy activities—like running air conditioners, washing machines, or industrial machinery—to off-peak times . If your usage is steady throughout the day, the General tariff might offer better cost predictability .

How to apply

If you decide that ToU is the right move for your home or business, you can apply through the myTNB app, by emailing TNB, or by visiting your nearest Kedai Tenaga . Before switching, it is recommended to check your usage patterns to ensure you can take full advantage of the off-peak savings .
