More trains, less waiting

The government is spending RM283 million to bring in 12 new "Three Car Set" (3CS) trains. The goal is simple: cut down your waiting time and give you a more comfortable, modern experience on the Butterworth–Padang Besar and Ipoh–Butterworth routes .

When can you hop on?

The first of these new KTM Class 84 trains arrived in August 2026 . While they are already here, you can expect them to be fully operational and serving passengers by February 2027 . This upgrade is a big step toward handling the growing number of people choosing to travel by train in the north .

Why the upgrade?

More people are taking the train than ever before. In fact, daily ridership in the northern sector jumped by 29% between 2023 and 2024 .

KTMB has already been working to improve things by moving coaches around and extending services to Ipoh, and these new trains are the next big move to keep everyone moving efficiently .

If you need to plan your trip, you can always check the latest schedules on the official KTMB website .
