A heartbreaking incident in Kedah has shown just how dangerous "vigilante justice" can be. An 18-year-old boy lost his life after a group of people decided to punish him themselves for allegedly stealing a motorcycle .
What happened to the teenager?
The victim, Muhammad Haikal Mohd Shahrilnizam, was caught in Pendang on 5 October after being accused of stealing a bike. According to Kedah police, the group held the teen at a house for two days. During that time, he was allegedly beaten and tortured. Sadly, his body was found by the side of the road in Jalan Harvard, Gurun, on 8 October .
Police have since arrested 14 men, aged between 16 and 24, in connection with the case. They are now being investigated for murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code .
Don't take matters into your own hands
While motorcycle theft is a frustrating and ongoing problem in Kedah, taking the law into your own hands is never the solution. Police have been working hard to break up theft syndicates, such as an operation in September 2025 that saw six suspects arrested in Kota Setar .
Authorities are urging the public to trust the legal system. If you suspect someone of a crime, report it to the police instead of resorting to violence .
How to protect your bike (and yourself)
Police have noted that many motorcycle thefts happen simply because of negligence, such as leaving keys in the ignition .
If your motorcycle is ever stolen, here is what you should do:
- File a police report immediately: This is the first and most important step to help the authorities with their investigation .
- Work with the authorities: Cooperating with the police and your insurance company gives you the best chance of recovering your property and getting a legal resolution .
Please remember: no piece of property is worth a life. Always let the police handle criminal matters.
