We've all been there: you're at a roadside stall, ready to pay a premium price for a "genuine" Penang durian, but you can't help but wonder if it's actually from somewhere else. As the global demand for our King of Fruits skyrockets, farmers are now turning to high-tech solutions to make sure you're getting the real deal .

Just scan it with your phone

To stop sellers from passing off out-of-state durians as Penang-grown, the Penang Fruit Farmers Association has rolled out a new QR code tracking system. Farmers attach these special tags to the durian stems. Once they activate the details online, you can simply scan the code with your smartphone to verify exactly where your fruit came from .

Built-in security to stop scammers

The system is designed to be tamper-proof. Each QR code only stays valid for seven days after it's first scanned, which prevents dishonest sellers from reusing or copying the tags. Plus, the tech company behind the database can send out alerts if they spot any suspicious activity or duplicate codes .

Protecting the "Penang" brand

This project is still in its early days, but there are plans to add more info, like specific durian varieties, in the future. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu is fully behind the initiative. He believes that protecting the reputation of Malaysian durians is crucial, especially as they become a massive hit in international markets like China .

Not the first time we've gone high-tech

This isn't the first time we've used tech to protect our durian reputation. Back in 2025, the Penang government teamed up with MIMOS to launch "Mi-Trace," a track-and-trace system. That project was also created to stop the sale of fake Balik Pulau durians and ensure that our premium exports stay authentic .
