Malaysia has officially passed the Road Transport (Amendment) Bill 2026. This update is all about making our roads safer and bringing traffic enforcement into the digital age . First introduced in June 2026, the new law introduces tougher penalties for dangerous driving and makes everyday transport services much easier to handle online .

Stricter penalties for serious offences

If you're caught street racing or testing your car's speed on public roads, you're in big trouble. First-time offenders could face up to RM10,000 in fines and two years in jail. If you're a repeat offender, that jail time could jump to five years . The government is also cracking down on tonto syndicates—those who interfere with enforcement officers—with fines up to RM50,000 and five years in prison .

Higher fines and compound rates

To stop people from breaking the law repeatedly, the minimum court fine for common offences like speeding or driving without a licence has been set at RM500 . The maximum compound rate is also going up to RM500. Don't panic just yet, though—the Transport Minister has given everyone a grace period until 1 January 2029 to get used to these new rules .

Digitalisation of transport services

Good news for those who hate paperwork: the law now officially recognises digital documents on the MyJPJ app as valid . The amendments also make it possible to file police reports for accidents online and receive summonses electronically, which should save everyone a lot of time and hassle .

Future reforms for accident victims

While this Bill focuses on enforcement, the Ministry of Transport isn't stopping here. They are planning to table more changes later this year. These upcoming updates will focus on how to better compensate victims of accidents caused by drunk or drug-impaired drivers, ensuring they get the support they need .
