If you have been trying to summon your digital helper lately and getting nothing but silence, you aren't alone. Google Assistant, the voice-activated software that became a staple of our smartphones and smart homes, has officially been shut down .

A decade of voice-activated help

Debuting in 2016, Google Assistant quickly became a household name, helping users manage their schedules, control smart home devices, and answer burning questions with a simple "Hey Google" . Over its 10-year lifespan, it grew from a messaging app feature into a massive platform available on over 1 billion devices worldwide .

The transition to Gemini

The writing had been on the wall for some time. In October 2023, Google introduced Gemini—an experimental AI chatbot—as a potential successor to the original assistant . Following a phased rollout, Google began encouraging users to switch over to this newer, AI-driven model to handle their daily tasks .

The final shutdown

The transition reached its conclusion this year. After announcing in August 2026 that the service would be sunset, Google officially pulled the plug on the platform on 28 September 2026 . While many of the actions we loved are being integrated into the new AI experience, the original Google Assistant is now a thing of the past .
