Big news for the local automotive scene: Jardine Cycle & Carriage (JC&C) has announced plans to sell its automotive and retail business in Malaysia and Singapore to Indonesia's Chandra Asri Group .
A deal worth RM844 million
The acquisition, valued at approximately SGD265 million (RM844 million), will see the Chandra Asri Group take over JC&C's distribution, retail, and aftersales operations . This includes the management of several major automotive brands currently under the Cycle & Carriage portfolio, such as Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot, Kia, and Leapmotor .
Why is this happening?
JC&C stated that the sale is intended to "crystallise value" from its automotive business while allowing the company to simplify its portfolio and focus on its core markets in Indonesia and Vietnam . As part of a wider corporate shift, the parent company has also proposed changing its name to Jardine Matheson Southeast Asia .
What does this mean for customers?
If you are a current owner or are looking to purchase a vehicle, it is essentially business as usual. The transition is expected to be seamless, with day-to-day operations and outlets remaining unaffected by the change in ownership . The Chandra Asri Group views this acquisition as a strategic move to expand its mobility solutions within its existing infrastructure ecosystem .
