Malaysians really love their vanity plates! The recent auction for the 'H' series licence plates just proved it, bringing in a massive RM91.2 million in just five days .
A record-shattering bidding war
The auction took place from 16 to 20 September 2026. During that time, 34,664 people fought over 8,223 available numbers .
The biggest winner was the 'H 1' plate, which sold for a jaw-dropping RM10.77 million. This completely smashed the previous record of RM1.75 million, which was set by the 'FFF 1' plate back in 2024 .
Why the 'H' series is special
The 'H' series was launched to represent "harmony" for Malaysia Day. It is also significant because it is the final single-letter prefix the Road Transport Department (JPJ) will issue .
To put the success of this auction into perspective, the money raised in these five days is double the total amount collected from all special plate series throughout the entire year of 2024, which was just under RM46 million .
Where the money goes
Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirmed that the funds will be used for public welfare and road safety .
This includes initiatives like free motorcycle licence training, helmet exchange programmes, and airfare subsidies for university students from East Malaysia. Any remaining funds will go toward supporting federal public services .
