If you've ever worried about someone stealing your art, music, or writing, you're not alone. In Malaysia, your creative rights are protected under the Copyright Act 1987 .
Here is the breakdown of how it actually works:
You're protected the moment you create it
The best part about copyright in Malaysia is that it's automatic. You don't need to fill out any forms or pay a fee to be legally protected the second you finish your work .
Whether it's a song, a painting, or a blog post, it's yours by default as long as it meets the basic requirements for protection . Because there is no official "registration" process to start your copyright, it is a smart move to keep good records of your work and proof of when you created it .
Can you "register" your work?
While you don't have to, the government introduced a voluntary notification system back in 2012 .
You can pay a fee to record your work with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) . Just keep in mind that this doesn't "create" your copyright—you already own it! Instead, this notification acts as an official record that can be used as evidence if you ever need to take someone to court for copying your work .
How long does the protection last?
It depends on what you've created:
- Literary, musical, and artistic works: Your copyright lasts for your entire lifetime, plus another 50 years after you pass away .
- Films, sound recordings, and published editions: These are protected for 50 years, starting from the year after the work was first published or performed .
So, keep creating! Your work is legally yours from the moment it hits the page (or the screen).
