We've all been there—you want to keep your soda cold for a long day out, so you pour it into your favourite insulated water bottle. It seems like a great idea, but you might want to think twice. Most standard water bottles aren't built to handle fizzy drinks, and using them could lead to a messy disaster or even an injury .
The pressure is real
Standard insulated bottles are designed for still drinks like water, coffee, or tea. Carbonated drinks, however, are full of pressurised carbon dioxide. When the temperature changes or the bottle gets shaken, that gas expands.
Because regular bottles don't have safety valves, the gas gets trapped. This can cause the bottle to warp, break, or make the lid get stuck. If you try to force it open, the pressure can cause a "geyser" effect, potentially shooting the cap off at high speeds .
It's bad for your bottle (and your health)
Carbonated drinks are acidic, which is bad news for the inside of a metal flask. Over time, this acid can wear down the bottle's lining. This might cause metal to leak into your drink, leaving you with a weird metallic taste and smell.
Plus, there's the hygiene factor. Soda is sugary and sticky. If it gets into the hard-to-reach corners of your bottle, it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria, especially if the bottle isn't easy to scrub clean .
How to do it safely
If you really want to carry fizzy drinks on the go, you need a bottle specifically labelled as "carbonated compatible." These are designed with special safety valves that let the gas escape slowly when you open the lid.
When you're shopping for one, look for a simple design with a smooth interior. This makes it much easier to wash away sticky sugar residue and keeps your bottle clean and safe to use .
