New Authentic Portuguese Bakery Opens In KL With Recipes Honouring The Owner's Grandmother
From Lisbon to KL.
Bartolo Lisboa Bakehouse, a charming new bakery and café, has recently opened in Central Market, introducing a taste of Portugal to Kuala Lumpur
When we think about Portugal, the first thing that probably comes to mind are Portuguese egg tarts.
That's exactly what this bakery offers — authentic, flaky, creamy egg tarts (Pastel de Nata) that are made with a traditional Portuguese recipe dating back three or four generations.
The 30-year-old owner, David Gomes da Silva, who hails from Lisbon, Portugal, told FMT that most Portuguese egg tarts in Malaysia have been adapted to suit local palates, but theirs remain faithful to the original Portuguese recipe.
In fact, he uses recipes passed down from his grandmother's exceptional cooking and baking skills
Having opened less than two months ago, Bartolo has received a warm reception so far.
Besides the traditional egg tarts, the café also offers a selection of pesticos (small plates), sandwiches, and breads, all faithfully capturing the essence of Portuguese flavours.
The menu also features options such as octopus salad, duck and spinach croquettes, brioche with coconut crumble, and other delicious treats.
Every facet of the bakery's ambiance transports you to the heart of Portugal, making you feel as though you've stepped into a quaint café nestled on the streets of Lisbon
The tiles, decoration, and paintings in the bakery were flown directly from Portugal, with some even originating from David's grandmother's home or a flea market in Lisbon.
Even the logo was handwritten by the owner's three-year-old nephew and digitised for the café's sign.
