He could face up to three years in prison or a fine between RM25,000 and RM100,000, or both, if found guilty.
The man who was caught on camera abusing dogs on multiple occasions in Johor Bahru has come forward to make a public apology
In a 45-second video posted under a Facebook account named Braden Yap, the 19-year-old confessed that what he did was a grave mistake and requested for a second chance from the public.
"I understand no matter how I explain. I should not have done that. I admit that it was my mistake and I regret it," he explained in the video that was posted today, 31 March.
He added that he will refrain from repeating the same mistake again in the future.
"I will also pay for the medical expenses (of the injured dogs)," he said.
Despite the man's apology, netizens are not ready to forgive him
One Facebook user commented that the 19-year-old will only understand the severity of his crime if he was at the receiving end of the abuse.
Another user said that the only reason the man is apologising is because he got caught red-handed.
An angry user commented that the only way he can make up for his crime is by going to prison.
The case is being investigated by the Veterinary Services Department under Section 29(1)(e) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 for causing unnecessary pain and suffering to an animal
According to The Star, Johor Baru North district acting police chief Supt Fariz Ammar Abdullah said that if found guilty, the perpetrator could face up to three years in prison, a fine of between RM25,000 and RM100,000, or both.
