1Million Women Purple Walk A Success Across The Nation

The 1Million Women Purple Walk was sucessfully held this morning (17/3/2013) as tens of thousands of women across 14 states gather together and walk in unity to celebrate International Women's Day. Bearing the International Women's Day theme colour, purple, the street gathering celebrated the successes of women in Malaysia. The event went smoothly as the Prime Minister not only officiated the event, but also launched a new women's community programme - Perwani.

PM launches '1 Malaysia Perwani Community programme' at the walk

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak launched the 1 Malaysia Perwani Community programme, a women community group programme to enable women to report crime and threats to national security.

He aims to set up 100,000 Perwani groups throughout Malaysia comprising 10 to 20 women to be the eyes and ears of the government in fighting crime and threats to national security.

Perwani will be linked to organisations like the Police Families Association (Perkep), the Malaysian Armed Forces Family Welfare Association (Bakat) and Puspanita.

Thousands of Malaysian women took to the streets Sunday for the 1Million Women Purple Walk in conjunction with International Women's Day.

The 1Million Women Purple Walk was held simultaneously in 14 states and started at 8am.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak launched the event at Putrajaya while mentris besar and chief ministers did the same at state-level. Purple is the theme colour for International Women's Day.

"But we do not just want to recognize women. We want to empower women and want them to be part of mainstream development and transformation," Najib said.

The first in Malaysia, the walk is to show solidarity towards the Government's commitment in empowering women in Malaysia and to celebrate the successes of Malaysian women in various sectors.

Najib said Malaysia would not have achieved its goals had women not been part of the mainstream development and transformation.

KUALA TERENGGANU: 30,000 peserta berjalan kaki sejauh dua kilometer bermula dari Dataran Batu Buruk. Ia dirasmikan oleh Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said.

KELANTAN: Kira-kira 60,000 wanita yang menyertai acara itu menyanyikan lagu patriotik sebagai tanda sokongan kepada anggota keselamatan di Sabah.

JOHOR: Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman lauded women's role in the family, community and economy citing them as natural multi-taskers.

MELAKA: Ketua Menteri Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam berucap di hadapan kira-kira 10,000 peserta di Dataran Pahlawan, berkata peranan wanita kini semakin penting dan dihargai.

SABAH: 15,000 wanita berhimpun di Dataran Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu bagi menyertai perhimpunan kaum Hawa yang julung kali diadakan dan dirasmikan oleh Ketua Menteri Datuk Seri Musa Aman.

LUMUT: About 1,000 folks showed up at the Lumut Jetty where participants took part in an aerobic session. Lumut MP Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said Malaysians showed their unity and government suppott.

PULAU PINANG: Menteri Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop merasmikan perhimpunan peringkat negeri di Permatang Pauh disertai kira-kira 30,000 wanita.

IPOH: About 20,000 people took part in the event at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Recreational Park. The participants were flagged off by Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir at SM Vokasional Ipoh.

KUCHING: Diadakan serentak di 11 bahadian di seluruh sarawk. 57,000 peserta telah mengadiri program ini termasuk Ketua Menteri Sarawak Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud yang merasmikannya.

PUTRAJAYA: Lebih 40,000 wanita menyertai berbagai acara yang dianjurkan sempena dengan sambutan tersebut.
