Malaysia Airlines has advised passengers travelling through Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) from 2 to 4 October to allow extra travel time

The airline said congestion is expected on roads around KLIA and routes leading to the airport as thousands of spectators make their way to the Sepang International Circuit for the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix Malaysia 2026.

Access to KLIA will remain available, but passengers have been advised to monitor traffic conditions and road closure updates from the police, and to use alternative routes where necessary.

Malaysia Airlines is also encouraging passengers to consider taking the KLIA Ekspres to avoid road congestion, reported Utusan Malaysia.

About 200,000 people are expected at Sepang

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) group managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani told The Star that around 200,000 spectators are expected over the three-day race weekend.

Sunday, 4 October, is expected to draw the most spectators.

"We want to make sure that the flow of people coming to the event is smooth. We will facilitate parking, but we strongly encourage visitors to use public transport to avoid congestion, as parking is limited," he was quoted as saying.

MAHB has also formed a special task force involving various government agencies to manage passenger movement during the event.

Sama-Sama Hotel at KLIA is also fully booked for the race weekend, according to Mohd Izani.

So, how early should you get to KLIA?

Malaysia Airlines is advising passengers to arrive at KLIA at least:

  • Three hours before departure for international flights
  • Two hours before departure for domestic flights

Check-in counters for both domestic and international flights close 60 minutes before the scheduled departure time.

The airline said passengers should also monitor traffic and road closure updates from the Royal Malaysia Police before travelling to the airport.
