In an incident that happened in Yongning county, Ningxia region of northwest China last week, a six-year-old girl was beaten to death while playing with her two cousin brothers, aged 12 and seven

According to a report in South China Morning Post (SCMP), the incident happened last Saturday, 13 July, when she had gone out to play with her cousins.

The three of them were said to regular playmates, SCMP reported via Beijing News.

A day after the girl's family reported her missing on Saturday evening, police found her body in a bag at an abandoned house owned by the boy's family.

According to the girl's grandma, the six-year-old had suffered "horrible" injuries to her head and neck, SCMP said in its report on Thursday, 18 July.

She said that while police told her that her granddaughter was beaten, they have not yet found the weapon that was used.

While police said their investigations had concluded that the girl was playing with the boys when she was knocked unconscious after falling from a climbing frame and was beaten to death by the elder brother, the cousin will face no further action from the authorities

In a notice issued on Wednesday, 17 July, Yongning county police said that the 12-year-old boy got scared after the girl fell unconscious fearing that she would tell his parents.

The boy then picked up a wooden plank and hit the six-year-old repeatedly.

However, while the police investigation determined that the 12-year-old had carried out the killing, they could not charge him with any offence because of his age.

Under Article 17 of China's criminal code, children aged under 14 cannot be held criminally responsible for any offence, SCMP reported.
