Starting July, Malaysians will be able to purchase subsidised diesel at RM2.10 per litre nationwide
In a statement yesterday, 21 June, the Finance Ministry said the new pricing will be implemented through a MyKad-based mechanism, similar to the RON95 subsidy system under the BUDI95 programme.
"Through this reform, Malaysians will enjoy the same price and the same method nationwide," the ministry said.
Under the system, subsidised diesel will only be available to Malaysians through MyKad verification
Non-citizens and those who are not eligible will have to pay the market price for diesel.
The ministry said the use of MyKad is essential to ensure government subsidies are only enjoyed by Malaysians, while also helping to curb leakages and the smuggling of subsidised fuel out of the country.
Currently, unsubsidised diesel is priced at RM4.37 per litre in Peninsular Malaysia, while diesel in Sabah and Sarawak is sold at RM2.15 per litre
With the targeted subsidy, diesel prices in Sabah and Sarawak will be standardised with those in Peninsular Malaysia, allowing Malaysians across the country to enjoy the same subsidised rate.
