An 18-year-old student of an Islamic boarding school at Pondok Pesantren Nurul Ikhlas in Padang Panjang, Indonesia passed away after allegedly being beaten by 19 fellow students
Local police revealed that students at the school had accused the victim of theft, believing that he was responsible for the disappearance of several items at their dorm
"We're still investigating whether the victim really took his friends' belongings or whether there were any other motives," said Padang Panjang Police’s Crime Investigation Unit Chief Kalbert Jonaidi.
"We have seized some evidence, such as a broken broomstick and shoes allegedly used to beat up the victim, and the victim's clothes," he added.
17 of the students have been charged as murder suspects and will be investigated in accordance with Indonesia's Child Protection Laws due to their ages.
Two other students, believed to be involved in the abuse, are still being treated as witnesses.
According to Detik News, several staff members of the school, including the dorm head, are also being questioned to determine whether there was any negligence on their part.
