All secondary school students under the Ministry of Education (MOE) and students at public universities (IPTAs) nationwide will receive a RM100 book voucher, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced today, 29 May
According to the New Straits Times, Anwar made the announcement while officiating the opening ceremony of the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair (KLIBF) at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur.
He said the initiative aims to inculcate a stronger reading culture and encourage knowledge development among young Malaysians.
"If we want this country to become a truly civilised nation with a strong culture of knowledge and broad intellectual capacity, we must encourage reading," he said.
Anwar added that although financial constraints remain a challenge, books and education must continue to be prioritised.
"I told the Finance Ministry that although it is difficult and challenging, matters involving books and education must continue to be given priority.
"Therefore, all secondary school students under the Education Ministry and university students under the Higher Education Ministry throughout the country will continue to receive RM100 each," he said.
The Prime Minister said the voucher can be used throughout the year, beginning with KLIBF, which runs from today until 7 June
Following the announcement, MOE released a statement confirming that the initiative would be implemented soon.
"MOE will immediately detail the implementation of this book voucher initiative as announced by the Prime Minister and execute it in the near future. It is expected to benefit more than two million students under MOE," the ministry said.
The ministry added that the initiative aligns with its efforts to make reading a priority among students while improving language proficiency and knowledge.
