Anwar Ibrahim says NS is wasteful and should be reviewed or stopped altogether in 2014

"We propose that the NS, which has caused the death of 22 teenagers, be stopped next year as a moratorium to allow a parliament select committee to be set up to make revisions or scrap it altogether," he said.

“Finally, as an example in terms of wastage, we propose that the PLKN (National Service), which is now conducted annually and has caused, unfortunately, deaths of 22 students, needs to be reviewed,” said Anwar at a joint press conference with DAP’s Lim Kit Siang and PAS’ Datuk Mustafa Ali at the PKR headquarters here today.

Pakatan Rakyat's proposal to halt NS is in anticipation of it's shadow budget to the upcoming Budget 2014

Anwar was commenting on PR's shadow budget for 2014, which aims to reduce Malaysia's deficit by 3%.

PR's shadow budget, he added, will be unveiled by October 21, four days before Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is expected to table the federal government's budget for 2014.

“First on the Budget, the focus would be on issue inequality because under Barisan Nasional (BN) administration, clearly there is a widening gap between the very rich and the poor, and this, of course, is an issue of concern the Pakatan Rakyat Budget will address,” said the former finance minister.
