Amidst the current political crisis, Anwar Ibrahim, who is the president of PKR, has now said that he is taking a step back and is naming Dr Mahathir Mohamad as Pakatan Harapan's candidate for Prime Minister
The PKR president was at Istana Negara to have an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (YDPA). Anwar, accompanied by Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil, spent about 20 minutes at the Palace.
According to The Star, Anwar has handed in a statutory declaration (SD) at the Palace, stating Pakatan Harapan has named Dr Mahathir as their candidate for Prime Minister.
"I will be taking a step back and have named Tun Mahathir as our candidate for Prime Minister so that we can avoid the country being further dragged into this power struggle and into an old system which has been rejected by the people," he was quoted as saying by the English daily.
Anwar said that while he is "touched" by the support that he received, he is, once again, prioritising "the nation above personal agenda"
According to the PKR president, he met with Dr Mahathir on Friday.
New Straits Times reported that it was the first meeting between the two leaders since the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government and Dr Mahathir's resignation as the seventh Prime Minister on Monday.
Anwar, however, did not reveal what was discussed at the meeting yesterday.
Meanwhile, prior to leaving for the Palace today, Anwar along with his wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was at Eastin Hotel in Petaling Jaya for his meeting with Dr Mahathir.
