Selangor To Appoint New MB As Azmin Ali Steps Down To Join Cabinet
However, Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali will remain as the Selangor Menteri Besar until a new candidate is formally appointed.
Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has consented for Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali to take up the federal post of Minister of Economic Affairs
"The Sultan was informed by Mohamed Azmin that he has agreed to accept the portfolio of Minister of Economic Affairs and that the decision (to accept) was made after the latter was given explanation and confirmation by the Prime Minister of his jurisdiction and scope of duties under the new ministry," the private secretary to the Sultan, Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani in a statement issued today, as reported by theSun.
Azmin, who defended his Bukit Antarabangsa state seat and Gombak parliamentary seat during the 14th general election, was sworn in as Selangor Menteri Besar before the Selangor state ruler at Istana Alam Shah on 11 May.
One week later, on 18 May, Azmin was named as one of the 14 federal ministers who will form the Pakatan Harapan Cabinet
The appointment as Economic Affairs Minister came as a shock to Azmin, who said that he only found out about the selection after being informed by the state secretary.
Azmin later met with Sultan Sharafuddin to inform the king of his decision to helm the federal ministry on 20 May.
Azmin will remain as the state's Menteri Besar for the time being, but he will eventually relinquish his position when a successor is picked
As per normal protocol, Azmin is expected to present a list of potential candidates to Sultan Sharafuddin for consideration.
“He will remain as Menteri Besar until the transition of power to the new Menteri Besar can take place smoothly and systematically.
"The process is in line with the Selangor State Constitution 1959 and the Federal Constitution," Mohamad Munir said.
