A 5-day-old baby girl was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II (HRPZ II) in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, where medical staff made a startling discovery during a urine screening on 6 August
The screening revealed that the newborn tested positive for both amphetamine and benzodiazepines, raising alarm among the attending healthcare team.
According to Harian Metro, the infant was believed to have been exposed to the illicit substances in utero before birth.
Following the hospital's report, police arrested the infant's 30-year-old mother to assist with investigations
A subsequent urine test conducted on the mother also returned positive for benzodiazepines.
Police said the unemployed woman has no prior criminal record, and the case is being investigated by the Kota Bharu District Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (BSJND).
The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for alleged child abuse, neglect, or abandonment, alongside Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
