A holidaymaker planning a weekend getaway to the mountain resort city of Baguio in the Philippines accidentally contacted a women's detention facility to inquire about room availability
The mix-up occurred when the traveller mistook the official social media page of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Baguio City Jail Female Dormitory for a hotel or room rental service.
Unaware that she was messaging a correctional facility, the woman sent an enquiry asking if there were any "available rooms" for an upcoming weekend staycation.
Jail personnel politely clarified that the establishment was a women's detention centre. Realising her mistake, the embarrassed tourist apologised briefly before ending the conversation.
Instead of keeping the exchange private, the detention centre shared screenshots of the conversation on its official Facebook page
The facility later published a lighthearted reminder clarifying that detention centres do not operate as commercial lodging, joking that the jail was "fully booked" and asking travellers to refrain from sending further booking requests.
Jail officials used the unexpected attention to highlight their rehabilitation initiatives within the facility
They also encouraged the public to support products handcrafted by female persons deprived of liberty (PDLs), showcasing items such as handwoven bags, beaded handicrafts, pastries, and peanut butter.
