A Texas barber demonstrated remarkable honesty after finding a bag containing USD128,514 (RM525,300) in cash sitting on top of an ATM

The 37-year-old resident of Lewisville, who has chosen to remain anonymous, made the unexpected discovery on 3 August while visiting a Bank of America ATM. Instead of keeping the money, he immediately set out to locate its rightful owner.

The bag also contained a smaller bag holding 19 bank cheques. Lewisville Police Detective Gina Miller said the money appeared to have been accidentally left behind on top of the ATM.

Initial markings on one of the bags suggested a potential link to a nearby fast food outlet

The barber promptly visited the fast-food establishment to ask about the missing money, but the restaurant manager confirmed the money did not belong to the business.

He then called 911 and handed the entire stash over to the local police department. After checking the contents, investigating officers confirmed that the USD128,514 (RM525,300) in cash matched the amount stated on an official bank deposit slip found inside the bag.

Police enquiries revealed that the cash belonged directly to Bank of America

Armed security couriers from Brink's, the bank's contracted cash logistics handler, had accidentally left the bag behind while performing routine maintenance on the ATM. Brink's declined to comment on the oversight, citing internal policies regarding active law enforcement investigations and employee safety protocols.

Lewisville police chief Brook Rollins praised the barber's integrity, emphasising that while recovering such large sums is extremely rare, it is even more unusual for it to be found without any apparent connection to criminal activity. He added that the incident serves as a reminder of the goodwill that exists within local communities.
