Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Victim Wakes Up From Coma One Week After Tragic Incident
Nor Aqilah is the sole survivor of the incident that claimed the lives of her twin sister and two friends.
The remaining survivor of a carbon monoxide poisoning incident that claimed three lives, Nor Aqilah Mohd Safwan, was reported to have finally regained consciousness from a coma one week after the tragic accident
Seberang Perai Tengah police chief ACP Shafee Abd Samad said the 21-year-old was able to nod her head to indicate that she recognised her family members.
"I have just been informed that Nor Aqilah has woken up from coma," he told New Straits Times on Thursday night, 24 September.
"And she even managed to nod her head, a sign that she recognised family members who came to visit her."
Nor Aqilah was placed into an induced coma to undergo hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) - a treatment for carbon monoxide poisoning
HBOT is used to speed up recovery of body tissue that have been starved of oxygen such as in carbon monoxide poisoning, serious infections, and wounds.
The survivor was treated at Tuanku Mizan Military Hospital in Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur, after being transferred there from Seberang Jaya Hospital on the day of the incident last Wednesday, 16 September.
The police chief said that based on the information they received, Nor Aqilah was in stable condition and that she is still being monitored.
It was reported that the four young women were on the way home from a vacation in Penang when the group decided to make a stop at a petrol station to rest in their vehicle
The deceased are Sharifah Fariesha Syed Fathi, Ayuni Shazwanie Shabri, and Nor Aqilah's twin, Nor Adilah, all 21-year-old pharmacy students from a private college in Batu Caves.
They were found by Ayuni's father who worried that they had not returned home on time.
Sharifah was pronounced dead in the vehicle while Ayuni died en route to Seberang Jaya Hospital.
Nor Adilah died while being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Lumut Military Hospital in Perak the following day.
