Rescue Mission To Save A Trapped Cat In Drainpipe Under Penang Bridge Goes Viral
The cat fell through a drain shaft and became stuck in the pipe.
A rescue operation to save a kitten trapped in a drainage pipe at the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge in Penang has gone viral on social media
The incident was first reported by TikTok user @zulfikri_fishing, who spotted the trapped cat near a pillar on the second bridge heading towards Batu Maung, Penang on Friday, 13 December, at approximately 3pm.
The cat could be heard "meowing" several times while peeking its head out through a hole at the top of the pipe.
Nine members of the Bayan Baru Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) arrived to carry out the rescue mission
Bayan Baru BBP Operations Commander, Azman Radzi said his team was also assisted by police from the Second Bridge Company Sdn Bhd (JKSB).
"The rescue work was carried out by lowering [rescue] members using the rappelling method on the side of the bridge divider," he said, as reported by Harian Metro.
Given the challenging location and height, the crew was lowered about 20m to reach the kitten. Within 44 minutes, the team successfully freed the kitten by cutting the PVC pipe, completing the operation at 5.01pm.
