A couple of months ago, a student from Wenzhou, China, lost his iPhone 15 Pro while travelling to Penang with two friends

The three were accompanying Yan Qingying, 42, a Singaporean professor at Wenzhou-Kean University in China. He had brought the three students to Singapore to visit a local university during the school holidays.

However, when the four later travelled to Penang on 31 July, one of the students, Zeng Yusong, 21, lost his iPhone 15 Pro, along with his ID card and student ID card, reported Lianhe Zaobao.

After realising that they might have left the phone in a private hire cab, the group returned to the place where they got out of the car and found the driver, who informed them that the phone not there.

According to driver, another passenger who got in the car after them might have picked it up.

Attempts to locate the phone via GPS failed as it was turned off

They travelled back to Singapore but continued their search for the iPhone via GPS.

To the student's surprise, he discovered that the iPhone was occasionally being turned on. He assumed someone was trying to unlock it but quickly turned it off to prevent the location from being tracked.

On 4 August, the group flew back to China as planned, unable to find the lost phone.

However, while transiting in Hong Kong, the student tracked the location of his lost iPhone to Wenzhou, where he was studying

The phone was located in a shopping mall about 80km from their campus.

"It's incredible!" the professor was quoted as saying.

After the group landed back in China on 5 August, Zeng went straight to the police, who accompanied him to a second-hand mobile phone store in a shopping mall.

It turned out that a Chinese couple who had travelled to Penang found his iPhone in the private hire cab and took it

When questioned by the police, the store clerk showed them the CCTV footage, which showed the couple arriving at the store to sell the phone. However, since it couldn't be unlocked, the clerk refused to buy it.

The couple decided to leave the phone with the clerk to attempt to unlock it.

Police later tracked the couple, who claimed that they waited for more than 10 minutes at the place where they found the phone, and only took it back to Wenzhou after no one showed up to claim it.

However, Zeng remains skeptical about the couple's explanation. He said if they were telling the truth, they would not have turned the phone off, preventing him from locating it.

The couple (left photo) is seen trying to sell the iPhone, while the student (right photo) is shown with the police after tracking the device to the store.
