The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has banned links, callback numbers, and messages requesting personal info on short message service (SMS)

In a statement, MCMC said the enforcement, in effect since 1 September, aims to protect users from SMS-based scams.

These scams are often perpetrated by individuals posing as legitimate organisations from private and public organisations to deceive unsuspecting victims.

If you receive such an SMS, you are encouraged to report it to MCMC via its official website by providing a screenshot of the message and the sender's number.

MCMC also warned the public to be cautious of similar fraudulent messages on other platforms such as Google RCS, Apple iMessage, WhatsApp, and Telegram

"Suspicious and potentially fraudulent messages can be reported directly to the platform provider or MCMC for further action," it said.

Previously, the commission instructed all telecommunication service providers to immediately block SMS containing prohibited content from being sent or received.

However, an exemption was granted to essential services, allowing businesses with legitimate enterprise shortcodes to include URLs or personal information for user convenience.

The exemption no longer applies as of the enforcement starting 1 September, reported The Star.
