A couple living in an apartment at Empire City in Damansara Perdana, Petaling Jaya, has taken to social media after claiming they heard what sounded like muffled cries coming from a utility shaft near their unit
According to the couple, the incident happened on the 23rd floor of the building on Saturday night, 1 August.
In a post shared in a Damansara Perdana community Facebook group, which has since been reposted across social media, the man said he and his wife first heard unusual sounds at around 9pm.
"We initially dismissed it as noises from the pipes before leaving to get dinner," he wrote.
However, when they returned about three hours later, they claimed the sounds had become louder.
"We heard banging sounds and what sounded like a woman who was gagged, muffled and screaming, and seemed to react when we asked if she was there or if she was okay," he alleged.
Fearing someone might be in danger, the couple said they contacted the police and the building's security personnel
According to the man, the 999 emergency operator told them that no immediate action could be taken as it was unclear whether an emergency was taking place.
He added that the security guards then contacted the building's maintenance team to investigate.
At around 1am, maintenance personnel reportedly inspected the utility shaft on the 23rd floor, as well as the floors above and below, by opening the access doors.
Despite the inspection, the couple claimed the sounds continued.
The maintenance team eventually concluded that the noises were likely coming from the building's pipes. However, the couple said they remained unconvinced, adding that the sounds continued even after the inspection ended.
The couple said the last time they heard the noises was on Sunday afternoon, 2 August, adding that the incident has left them unable to sleep due to concerns that someone could be in danger.
"I'm someone who hangs around the staircase area every now and then. The only noises I've ever heard are from the water pump and elevator. I've never heard anything like this before, which is why we were concerned," the man wrote, adding that they decided to share their experience online after exhausting other avenues to identify the source of the sounds.
The post has since gone viral, with some social media users speculating about paranormal causes, while others shared similar experiences of hearing unusual noises from building pipes
Several commenters also suggested additional checks to rule out the possibility that someone could be trapped or in danger.
At the time of writing, the police have not publicly commented on the incident.
