A man who torched a nasi kandar restaurant in Johor Baru ended up setting himself on fire during the attack, with CCTV footage showing him running away as flames engulfed his legs
The incident occurred at around 3.34am on 19 June at a nasi kandar restaurant in Bandar Dato' Onn, just one day before its scheduled grand opening.
Footage circulating on social media shows two masked men wearing crash helmets entering the restaurant before splashing what appeared to be flammable liquid and red paint across the premises.
As the pair prepared to leave, one of the men ignited the fuel. However, the flames immediately spread to his legs, forcing him to flee while on fire.
Johor Baru South police chief ACP Raub Selamat said police received a report from the restaurant operator at 3.59am
"The incident resulted in losses estimated at RM200,000, and the motive behind the attack is still unknown," Bernama quoted him as saying.
The case is being investigated under Section 436 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire or explosive substance.
The attack took place just a day before the restaurant's official opening on 20 June, where it had planned to offer free food to visitors.
Despite the damage, the restaurant owner said workers managed to complete repairs within a day, allowing the grand opening to proceed as scheduled.
Declining to be named, the owner said the outlet is now operating as the group's ninth branch, and that they are cooperating fully with investigators while awaiting the outcome of the police probe.
