A delivery man was charged in the Melaka Magistrates' Court yesterday, 15 October, for assaulting and threatening to kill his mother

According to Sinar Harian, Tai Siew Wong, 50, allegedly hit his mother, Bong Ngik Lan, 75, twice on the back of her head.

This incident occurred at their house at Rumah Awam Bertam Ulu, around 4.30pm on 26 September.

It is understood that the accused assaulted and threatened her following a disagreement that arose due to her memory problems.

He was also charged with intentionally making criminal threats to his mother during the same incident

He allegedly said to the victim, "One day I will kill you."

If convicted, Tai faces up to two years in prison or a maximum fine of RM 2,000 for the first indictment under Section 323 of the Penal Code.

For the second charge under Section 506, he faces up to two years in prison, a fine, or both.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read out to him.

Deputy public prosecutor Fiqri Hakim Zamri proposed an RM8,000 bail for each charge, with the condition that the accused must not disturb the victim until the case is concluded

However, Tai's lawyer, Nigel Tai, appealed for a lower bail amount, arguing that the accused works as a delivery man and has an income of only RM1,800 per month.

The lawyer added that the accused is also responsible for providing for his elderly mother.

Magistrate Sharda Shienha Mohd Suleimen set the bail at RM4,000 for both charges, with one guarantor.

The magistrate also ordered Tai to report to the nearest police station every two weeks and scheduled the next court date for 28 November.
