If you thought government websites were only good for renewing your road tax or applying for cash aid, think again
The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) has launched an online tool called the 'Causes of Death Calculator'. Instead of calculating your income tax relief or your EPF savings for retirement, this web tool calculates what is statistically most likely to finish you off based on national demographic data.
If you have ever caught yourself lying awake at 2am wondering about your own mortality, DOSM basically turned that existential dread into a digital questionnaire.
How does this tool work?
It is surprisingly straightforward to use.
When you open up the calculator on the DOSM portal, it asks you a series of basic demographic questions:
– Your age or birth year
– Your biological sex
– Your ethnicity
– The state or administrative district you live in

Once you key in your details, the system crunches national mortality data and spits out a ranked percentage list of the top causes of death for someone in your exact demographic bucket.
For instance, if you are a young adult male living in Selangor, transport accidents and heart issues will likely sit near the top of your result sheet. If you are older or living in specific regions like Kelantan or Perlis, ischaemic heart disease tends to dominate the charts by a wide margin.
It does not try to diagnose you personally or predict your exact day of reckoning; rather, it paints a statistical picture of what is taking out people just like you across the nation.
What the data is trying to tell us
Looking at the results is a bit of a reality check. For over two decades, ischaemic heart disease has remained the leading cause of medically certified deaths among Malaysians.
If you are between 15 and 40 years old, road accidents remain a massive risk factor. Meanwhile, pneumonia and diabetes mellitus consistently creep up as major threats as we get older.
The tool essentially takes those thick, 200-page demographic reports that usually sit gathering dust in government offices and turns them into something an average citizen can actually digest in two minutes.
You can actually try the calculator out yourself
