In a video released on 27 April, former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad tugged at viewers’ heartstrings as he explained his decision to get involved in politics again to two young children

The video features a little girl called Aishya who, upon meeting the Pakatan Harapan chairperson, asked him why he decided to continue "working".

He replied that he felt that there is still work to be done to rebuild our country, adding that he also wants to fix his past mistakes that has led to the current political situation in Malaysia

Aishya then introduced her brother and they discussed the meaning of Merdeka.

"Independence means we enjoy freedom, we are not colonised by people, we get to govern our own country, and to develop our country independently so that the people of our nation can live better," Mahathir shared with them.

92-year-old Mahathir teared up as he lamented how little time he has left to make amends for his past mistakes

"I am past 90, I don’t have much time left, but within my means, I will try my very best to work together with all my friends to rebuild our nation - Malaysia."

The video was tweeted and published on Mahathir’s Facebook page on Friday. Both videos racked up close to 762,000 views since then.

The video received some mixed reviews from the public, with some showing support and forgiveness while others were doubtful of his sincerity.

However, no matter which political side you are on, watching our former PM shed some tears in an act of asking for forgiveness is one that certainly offers our nation the hope we desperately need for a better Malaysia.
