It's durian season, and Malaysians are in for a treat.
The king of fruits is seeing a massive price drop this year, with some durians being sold for as low as RM2 each due to a nationwide oversupply.
Netizens on social media have been posting photos of wholesale vendors setting up shop to sell baskets upon baskets of durians at unusually low prices.
Since durians have a short shelf life, many sellers are rolling out generous promotions to clear stock quickly.
Photos circulating online show local durian varieties being sold for just RM2 per fruit, while premium varieties such as Musang King are going for as low as RM15 per kg.
Some sellers are even charging customers by the bag, with buyers seen stuffing large plastic bags or gunny sacks with as many durians as they can fit.
"I thought this was a night market, but it's a durian wholesaler! He had piles and piles of durians. We bought one plastic bag for RM40 and were so satisfied. All of the durians were very fresh," said one netizen.
Another netizen wrote, "This durian wholesaler is selling durians for cheap! One full plastic bag costs only RM20. You can get up to 11 fruits, as long as the plastic bag doesn't tear."

Meanwhile, the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) clarified that the current oversupply is not due to weak demand for local durians
According to Bernama, FAMA deputy director-general (Food Security and Operations) Faisal Iswardi Ismail said the oversupply is mainly caused by an influx of export-grade durian clones from younger orchards.
He explained that many of these fruits do not meet export requirements for markets such as China and Singapore, resulting in more supply being channelled into the local market.
Meanwhile, a durian vendor told Guang Ming Daily that the surge in supply could also be due to several major durian-producing states, including Penang, Perak, Johor, and Melaka, entering peak harvest season at around the same time.
