An elderly resident in China sparked online outrage after cutting a high-altitude worker's safety rope
On 17 September, a worker surnamed Liu was repairing the exterior wall of a high-rise building in Guangdong province.
According to South China Morning Post, Liu had descended from the 30th floor to a second-floor platform when he discovered that a crucial piece of his equipment was missing.
Someone had chopped over 10m off his 120m safety rope, leaving the remaining piece dangling from the platform.
Fortunately, Liu was already safely positioned on the platform when the rope was snipped, averting a fatal fall
Unable to complete his descent to the ground floor, Liu described the incident as "thoughtless".
An investigation soon uncovered the unlikely culprit behind the incident.
An elderly resident in their late 70s, living on the second floor, confessed to cutting the rope to use as a makeshift washing line.
The resident claimed they were completely unaware that the rope was a vital piece of safety equipment
Taking the resident's advanced age into account, Liu opted not to involve the authorities.
Instead, he worked with the building's property management to secure 400 yuan (RM263) in compensation for the damaged rope.
