Fahmi Fadzil Helps Owner Of Run-Down Car Whom He Was Criticised For Joking About
The driver's car had been hit by a container truck on 8 September.
After jokingly tweeting about a man's run-down car, Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil was recently able to track down the driver and apologise to him
On Wednesday, 16 October, Fahmi shared what took place in a Facebook post.
The MP previously came under fire for tweeting about a beat-up Proton Wira which he had seen on the road last month.
Some said that an MP with a high salary should not make fun of people living in poverty. Another person falsely claimed that he knew the driver, who works as a GrabFood driver and looks after his parents.
Fahmi apologised and deleted the tweet on the same day.
In an interesting turn of events, Fahmi was able to find the driver, 39-year-old Yap Chin Hoe, and helped him seek treatment for his loss of eyesight
"From our conversation, I learnt that he has vision problems which could lead to a total loss of sight, so I tried my best to seek help for him," he wrote.
"Alhamdulillah, I am thankful to the management of Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur which agreed to assist him pro bono as part of their corporate social responsibility."
An eye specialist found that Yap faced chronic retinal detachment in one eye and required laser treatment in the other eye.
The MP added that the surgery went well on Tuesday, 15 October, and that he paid Yap a visit the following day.
He also discovered that Yap's car had been hit by a container truck on 8 September.
However, he had an appointment to rush for and needed to continue driving instead of having it towed away.
"Yap's vehicle was considered a total loss and the insurance company will assist him fully," Fahmi shared.
