Falling Lamp Post Kills Teenager In Kuala Terengganu Freak Accident

A 49-year-old father has expressed grief and shock following the death of his 18-year-old son in a freak accident in Kuala Terengganu

According to Sinar Harian, the teenage victim, identified as Wah Han Keong, was in the passenger seat as he and his father were travelling to work from Taman Manir to Kuala Terengganu on Tuesday, 19 May.

The father, Wah Tee Tun, works as an electrician, while his son had been assisting him while waiting to enrol in a polytechnic to pursue automotive engineering.

In the 3.36pm incident on Jalan Losong Feri, a Volkswagen Golf GTI carrying a family of five reportedly skidded and crashed into a lamppost, before veering into the opposite lane and colliding with a Nissan Vanette.

During the collision, the falling lamppost struck the van and severed Han Keong's head.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, while the passengers in the Golf GTI, aged between 1 and 49, were unharmed, except for an 8-year-old who suffered a minor leg injury, reported China Press.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.

Speaking to reporters, Tee Tun described his son as hardworking and honest, who had been helping the family by working with him after completing his SPM

Recounting the incident, Tee Tun said he was driving at a normal speed of about 60km/h and insisted he did not do anything wrong, including trying to slow down, when the Golf GTI crashed into his van.

"I tried to calling my son and moving his body, but I realised his head had been severed and was beneath my feet," Sinar Harian quoted him as saying.

Seeing the father was in a state of shock, a witness at the scene, Norharizan Hassan, 48, rushed forward to cover the severed head, presumably with a cloth.

Norharizan said she remembered Tee Tun telling her that he only had a son and a daughter, and that losing his son had completely devastated him.

Overwhelmed by the tragedy, she said she could only look at Tee Tun in silence.

Tee Tun said he would pursue legal action to seek justice for his son

He added that Han Keong had been waiting for his University Central Unit (UPU) enrolment results, which were due to be announced tomorrow, 22 May, but he did not live to see them.

"We had made all the necessary preparations, but we are deeply saddened that our plans for him to continue his studies could not be fulfilled," he said.

The father described Han Keong as a patient and gentle person who would simply smile even when scolded while helping him at work.

"The deceased was also very close and dearly loved by his mother," Tee Tun said.

He said he would use video recordings of the incident to seek justice.
